A Built-In Designed to Move With You
Not every custom piece is meant to stay in one house forever — and this Surf City, NC built-in was designed around that idea from day one. The homeowners needed a single piece that could showcase a lifetime of cultural art and travel pieces, hold a serious book collection, and hide a TV in plain sight, all while living up to the character of the art it was built to display. And because they knew they might move someday, they wanted the confidence that this piece could come with them.
The Challenge
This is a collector’s piece as much as it is a built-in. The homeowners have an extensive collection of cultural art and statuary — the kind of pieces that deserve real display space, good lighting, and a design that doesn’t compete with them. On top of that, they needed practical storage for a large book collection and a way to keep a television in the room without it becoming the focal point. And unlike most built-ins, which are designed to live in a house permanently, this one needed to be built so it could be fully disassembled and reinstalled if the homeowners ever relocated.
The Design
The finished piece spans the full wall, combining open bookshelves, a concealed cabinet for the TV, and dedicated glass floating shelves for the art collection. LED lighting built into the glass shelving puts the focus exactly where it belongs — highlighting each piece the way a gallery would, rather than leaving the collection to compete with room lighting. The center cabinet keeps the TV tucked behind clean, simple doors, so the piece reads as a display cabinet first and an entertainment center second.
The real engineering challenge was making this piece portable without making it feel temporary. We built it using a specialized joinery system that allows the entire unit to come apart into manageable sections and go back together on the other side — without sacrificing the solid, built-in feel of a piece that’s meant to stay put. It’s a detail most people would never notice, but it means this homeowner’s investment moves with them instead of staying behind.
The Result
The finished built-in gives this collection the display it deserves — well-lit, well-organized, and built into the architecture of the room — while quietly solving a problem most custom cabinetry doesn’t even attempt to solve. It’s proof that custom doesn’t just mean built to fit a space; sometimes it means built to fit a life.
