A Master Bathroom Built-In That Does It All

Every custom project starts with a problem to solve, and this Wilmington, NC master bathroom had a good one: how do you fit closed storage, open display shelving, and a pull-out laundry hamper into a single footprint — without it feeling bulky or cluttered in a space that doesn’t have room to spare?

The Challenge

The homeowners knew exactly what they needed functionally: enclosed cabinets to keep everyday items out of sight, open shelving up top for towels and display pieces, and a dedicated pull-out hamper so laundry had a real home instead of a hamper sitting in the corner. The catch was space. The bathroom’s footprint left very little margin for error, which meant every inch of this built-in had to be planned down to the fraction of an inch — and it still needed to look like it belonged in the room, not like it was squeezed in as an afterthought.

The Design

The solution is a floor-to-ceiling built-in that runs the full height of the room, painted in a deep charcoal-navy that gives the piece real presence without overwhelming the space. Closed cabinet doors anchor the bottom half for everyday storage, while open shelving above brings in texture and gives the homeowners a place to display towels and decor. Polished nickel pulls tie the whole piece together with a clean, classic look.

Tucked into the lower cabinetry is a pull-out laundry hamper — a built-in solution that’s easy to miss until you see it in action, sliding out on full-extension hardware to reveal a hidden home for laundry that closes away completely when not in use.

The Result

The finished piece does exactly what it needed to: it gives the homeowners real, organized storage in a room that couldn’t afford to waste an inch, while adding architectural character that plays beautifully off the room’s black-and-white checkerboard marble floor. It’s proof that closed storage, open shelving, and specialty features like a hidden hamper don’t have to compete with each other — with the right design, they work together.
